The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers and pharmacists about the risks of using unapproved Viagra, a potentially dangerous prescription drug.
A recent study by the National Institute for Health Care Policy and Clinical Excellence (NICE), conducted by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, found that men taking the prescription drug, which is sold in 25 percent of U. pharmacies, had a significantly higher chance of dying of cardiovascular disease compared to men taking the generic form.
The study, published inThe Lancet of Health Sciences, examined data on men taking 25 percent of the popular generic form of Viagra, Pfizer’s well-known brand name for the medication.
The study, conducted by the NICE, found that men taking the drug had a significantly higher number of cardiovascular deaths compared to men taking the generic form.
The FDA’s warning comes as several other large, recent drug safety trials have found no evidence of increased cardiovascular risks among men taking the prescription drug. However, the FDA is still reviewing these findings to see if new information is needed.
The FDA recently issued a warning letter to the U. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which found that men taking the drug were more likely to be prescribed “pharmaceutical medicines containing a class of compounds called phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors.”
The FDA also found that men taking the drug had an estimated 15,000 cardiovascular deaths per year.
In addition, the study found that men taking the drug had a significantly higher risk of developing a heart attack and stroke than men taking the generic version of Viagra.
“The FDA’s warning letter is concerning the serious risks to men and the pharmaceutical industry associated with Viagra,” the FDA said in a statement. “Our analysis of the safety of Pfizer’s Viagra and other generic drugs highlights the risks of using the FDA’s warning labels on such drugs.”
The FDA’s warning letter follows a similar warning letter issued in the late 1990s. The FDA also issued a warning letter to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) in 2017 asking them to change the prescription drug’s label to include information about cardiovascular disease risks. The FDA also issued a warning letter to the American College of Physicians (ACP) in 2018 asking them to remove Viagra from their list of prescription drugs.
The FDA issued a new warning letter to the American Academy of Family Medicine (AFFM) in 2019 asking them to remove Viagra from their list of approved prescription drugs. The FDA also issued a new warning letter to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in 2020 asking them to remove Viagra from their list of approved prescription drugs.

The FDA issued its own warning letter last September, saying that it was “reviewing the data to determine the risk of increased cardiovascular events in men taking the FDA’s warning labeling for Viagra.” The FDA said it has made every effort to update its warning letter.
The FDA also issued a new warning letter to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists last June, asking them to change the label for Viagra to include information about a “serious, but rare adverse event” that could increase a man’s risk of heart attack and stroke.
The FDA also issued a warning letter to the American Heart Association in August 2019 asking them to remove Viagra from their list of approved prescription drugs.
The FDA also issued a new warning letter to the American Association of Clinical Pharmacologists in January 2020 asking them to remove Viagra from their list of approved prescription drugs. The FDA said that the company has not yet made any changes to its warning letter.
As for other drug safety issues, the FDA is reviewing data on Viagra, which has been used for more than two decades.
This study, conducted by the National Institute for Health Care Policy and Clinical Excellence, was funded by Pfizer Inc., which is part of the companies that make Viagra. The study’s author was, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and an associate dean of the Harvard School of Public Health.
The study was led by researchers from the National Cancer Institute at Harvard’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic.
